History and Future of K-Treks

Brad O’Neill '93 with students on 1st K to the Bay

In 2014, Brad O’Neill ’93 created and funded K to the Bay, the first K-Trek, in which four students traveled to San Francisco with business professor Amy MacMillan to learn about careers in entrepreneurship and high tech by meeting with his colleagues in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the fall of 2015, as the second K to the Bay was launched with four more students, another donor stepped forward and offered to fund a K-Trek to New York in March of 2016. For K to the Big Apple, seven students traveled to New York to explore careers in finance, business and economics by meeting with alumni working in those industries across the city.

In spring of 2017, the first K to the Windy City allowed students to explore careers in law, social justice and nonprofit administration in Chicago, and in the summer of 2018, this trek was expanded to include careers in sustainability. One day treks were also added in the 2016-2017 academic year, which now have included treks to Pfizer, Kellogg’s and Stryker.

As additional donations are confirmed, K-Treks will be added to explore other industries and geographies.
