Job shadows (or externships) provide students an invaluable opportunity to explore potential career paths by observing professionals in their day-to-day roles. This short-term, immersive experience allows students to gain first-hand insights into various industries, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers. Whether it’s attending meetings, observing client interactions, or learning about the workflow and company culture, students will gain a realistic perspective of what working in a particular industry entails.
We partner with local alumni and employers to develop 1-3 day job shadow experiences in various fields of interest to students. This program aims to:
- Bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application.
- Provide networking opportunities with industry professionals.
- Offer a deeper understanding of workplace dynamics, roles, and responsibilities.
- Inspire and guide students as they consider their career choices.

Externship Treks
The Center for Career and Professional Development piloted our first Externship Trek in June 2024. The Chicago Externship Trek combined short job shadow experiences with opportunities for students to network with alumni and explore the city of Chicago.
