DIY Track Externships
The DIY Track allows you to create an opportunity that best fits with your interests, passions, and career goals. The first step is to download the DIY Externship Checklist for suggestions on how to proceed. Next, you will need to find a K alum to host you at their workplace. To do this you will need to start networking and reaching out to alumni in Wisr.
The CCPD recommends using Wisr to connect and network with alumni. By joining Wisr, alumni have indicated their interest in working with current students, and some have even offered to help with job shadows and housing. Use Wisr to search for alumni by major, job title, location, and how they’re willing to help.
In addition to Wisr, you may have other ways to connect with alumni, and we encourage you to be creative. You might be able to connect with alumni through your sports team, student organizations, professors, or networking events on campus.
Once you have found and made a connection with an alum who is willing to host you, be sure to have a detailed and thorough conversation. Some things you will want to discuss include:
- How long will the opportunity be?
- Will it include a homestay with this alum?
- If you are not staying with the alumni job host, who will you be staying with?
- What will the objectives and day-to-day functions of the externship include?
- How will this externship connect with your larger career goals and educational interests?
Once you have answers to these questions and an alum has agreed to host you for an externship, download and complete the DIY Externship Agreement Form. Once the form is turned into the CCPD, you are now ready to complete the online DIY externship application. Please apply online.
